A guide for home garden herbs

Garden herbs have various advantages; these are sued for everything, from treating diseases to flavoring foods. Growing herbs in your home garden is very easy. Some herbs are perennial in nature; it means these types of herbs die in winter season and again grow in spring season. Some of the herbs are annual in nature and these are required to grow every year. Some herbs act as perennial weeds but require mild climate for their growth. Apart from these characteristics of herbs, every herb has its own specific growing requirements. Home gardening of herbs can be a beneficial activity for various usages.

 

Shade
Certain weeds and herbs grow well in less amount of sunlight. Such type of herbs requires short duration of days and sunlight intensity. As matter of fact, too much sunlight is harmful for the life of shade loving herbs. Some well known shade loving herbs are, "Asarum canadense," wild form of ginger and these herbs are perennial in nature. Such type of shade loving herbs can grow well under shady trees.

 

Full Sun
Full sun herbs are best to grow in enough sun light, these herbs require long day duration and need at least 6 to 8 hours of sunlight. In hot weather, however full sun herbs struggle for their survival. So it is important to consider protecting these herbs in extreme environment. If you are growing full sun weeds face the wilting problem in middle of the day, you should cover the herbs with cloth to provide some shade. Some good looking sun loving herbs are "Ocimum basilicum" and sweet basil.

 

Wet soil
Some herbs perform well in wet and damp soils. If you are planning to grow wet soil herbs in your garden, the soil you prepared should not be soggy and dry. Wet soil herbs are notorious for root rot and fungus problems, so you should treat the soil with fungicides to prevent these problems. The best known water loving herb is peppermint, and it is perennial in nature.

 


Dry soil

Most of the herbs are suitable for well drained soils and require little water. The herbs growing in the area of Mediterranean are good in flavor and taste due to natural oil build up in the herbs. The well known herbs like oregano and thyme perform well if the soil is fairly dry. You should prepare your garden soil according to the growing requirements of dry soil herbs.
