Planning for small gardens
You should want to identify the backyard in vicinity which is prone to sunshine. Craft a rough draft on a fragment of paper and on the graph paper, use a quarter inch square as foot. When done with that, you can comfortably get a rough draft for your garden. It is preferable to locate your garden at the North side this will help your plants get the most sunshine. A suitable garden could be around 18 feet square. You need to choose the type of garden you prefer; a traditional one or a raise bed type garden.
A crucial factor with the gardens is the restricted space and hence you should select your plants accordingly. It is important to select those plants which you prefer and have used before. Furthermore, you should not forget that flowers are a good complement to vegetables and herbs. You may add flowers with the other plants depending on the space you have or they can also planted in boxes or container which can benefit from tiny alcoves.
Once you are done with choosing the plants, you need to map them on the paper. Choose the place where the seeds will be located. It is advisable to have your tallest plants at the back end of the garden, the medium sized plants in the front and the smallest ones at the south end. This will ensure that your plants won’t be deprived of sunshine.
It is surely not essential to have the identical type of crop in a row. For instance, if you made a plan to grow the rows from north to south, place the taller vegetables at the back end of each row, the moderate length should be in middle and the smaller taller should place in front of each row. The most crucial aspect with respect to the growth of plants is the amount of sunshine they get. The more sunshine they get, the more they will grow. As the day cycle completes, you would look to minimize the shading. If the taller plants are placed at the very east of the garden, the other plants will be shaded by the morning sun.
Similarly, if the taller plants are placed at the very west of the garden, the dawn sun will shadow the other plants as the plants with taller size on the west of the garden will shade the afternoon sun.
