Zen gardens are made from rocks and sand, but occasionally plantation and wood work is also used in Zen garden. To give a sense of meditative relaxation and to promote the sense of serenity, the gravel or sand is raked into several patterns. The first ever Zen garden was built in 1499 in Kyoto Japan. Instructions
First of all to construct Zen garden, find a tray with one to two inch deep. For that purpose a baking pan or candy box works well. Choose the dark color which gives an appreciable contrast with sand.
Now pour the sand into the tray or container, fill almost ¾ portion of the container. As there is no water required for Zen gardens because the sand is the representative element for water.
The next thing for Zen garden preparation is the positioning of stones in sand. In traditional Zen garden 5 types of stones are used. Group the stones in sand according to the stone types. The shigyo type stones are the representative of fire and these must be arranged on the side or in front of other stones. Reisho stones should be positioned in low or vertical positions. The reisho stones are also considered the soul stones and represent the metal. The stone with flat appearance indicates water presence. Another type of stone is kikyaku stone and it is considered the root stone, because these stone are lying down.
The positions and patterns can be changed in Zen gardens; it can give relief from stress and promote enlightenment.
Tips and warnings
To make your Zen garden more appealing and attractive you can do some amendments. Include some pieces of bridges, wood, pathways and other things. You can also give a natural touch by incorporating miniatures like boats or birds. To make Zen garden more natural use the twigs instead of the fork.
All the equipments that you are required easily available at home garden stores. If you are unaware with Zen garden preparation there are some instruction manuals and kits available which already contain all helping material and necessary pieces.
